How A Great Space Game Is Developed

By Pattie S. Schaefer

A lot of space game designers and programmers put a tremendous amount of effort into the games they prepare since they are hoping to gain loyal fans from this genre. There is a large market for the new releases produced by these designers since millions of people around the world enjoy a wide range of different video games. Though adults prefer games that are more intense, graphic, and realistically challenging, younger gamers tend to prefer releases that are fun and simple while still presenting enough of a challenge to keep them engaged. In an effort to reach their target audience and make their latest games as popular as possible, modern game makers spend a lot of time designing every aspect of their new releases.

A space game design team frequently gets started with a basic gaming genre or concept, such as a shooter game, and then expand this with their own creative ideas in order to break from typical genre norms. This includes creating the essential storyline behind the events of the game and creating characters that will resonate with gamers while playing. Doing that is not always easy though, since they need to create a character that will not be too adult for children who play the game while at the same time not so childish that adult gamers become insulted or bored by the way the game progresses.

A particularly challenging part of designing a space game is creating the setting for the events of the game. Games need to have creative backgrounds that remind players of core science fiction themes without seeming like they are copies of other popular science fiction games or movies; striking this balance and being creative yet familiar is a challenge. Before the game is finally programmed, designers and artists work on finishing drawings and 3D images of the characters and settings they want to use in the game.

Testing has to be performed of the playable game itself to make sure that it will do well with gamers once it is released. Many hours are invested doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

Space game design demands a lot of effort and is not simply a matter of gathering several science fiction ideas and throwing them together. When you come to know what designers do to make your favorite games, you will appreciate them more.
