Controlling and Protecting Your Computer From The Music Download Madness

By Timothy G. Allen

Recently, following large numbers of people downloading illegal movies on the net, there was tons of sites offering the equivalent in music. In the beginning of this for most users it was great, though illegal, but website owners started to take advantage of this in even more unethical ways.

Website owners made (and continue to make) some quite unethical choices just to put a penny in their pocket. By adding pop up windows, spying software, and many other things to their sites, users were sometimes left with viruses and other elements. This is like after downloading an mp3, you have a new window (seemingly normal looking) but told you to purchase Viagra every time your searching the net. Awful to look at, and harmful to your computer.

When you're downloading an Mp3 music file online, there are a few things you will want to look for to not only protect your computer for malicious software and viruses, but to also get the best quality file you can, and all the while helping out the music industry as a whole. Take this into consideration, some may be obvious, and some not so:

1) Be aware of the quality of the MP3. The quality could vary anywhere from 20 kbps, as kind of blurry up to 320 kbps that is comparable to a CD. Aim for downloading files which are above 128 kbps. Any mp3's below that, can have an very unpleasant background which can sound awful if opting to burn on to a CD.

2) Your internet speed must be in a good shape. Sometimes it's necessary to restart your computer to get it back to optimum speed before attempting to download any mp3 file. You'll want anything over 3 kb/s to get the song in under 10 minutes.

3) Make sure the disk you're downloading music onto has enough space available. There is certainly nothing worse than getting an error when the download is almost finished, and discovering that the drive your using did'nt have enough space on it. This is certainly less and less common with high capacity drives being universally available, but you should still just make sure beforehand.

4) When downloading music, make sure you aren't making illegal copies. To prevent this, try making the music you download a sort of "sample", where after listening to it, you buy the album or actual file from a retailer. If you don't like the music, move on on something else where you will buy it. If you do this, you will indirectly keep the music industry rolling and musicians happy.

Overall, in downloading music (even illegally) it can be a beneficial experience if thinking about it right. You may learn about new bands that you'll pay for a concert ticket to or try to buy the album later. When you download music, try your best to keep it from a legal source, and keep the copies of the files to yourself.
