Understanding Terms Related To Space MMO Culture

By Pamela A. Go

As online role playing games get to be increasingly popular around the world, many of them, including space MMO titles, are developing their own unique culture. There are truly millions of players signed up for massively multiplayer online games around the world, making this a big part of the modern gaming industry. One of the unique challenges that online games give to developers is that the gaming environment must stay active and fresh 24 hours a day in order to support players who are logging on in a variety of countries. Cultures are now developing around MMORPG games because new communities of gamers are being built both inside and outside the game world where new expressions and behavior are taking over.

Keeping the world of space MMO games constantly new and interesting is important to game designers who want to keep players coming back for more. In order to adjust game play and force players to reconsider their approach to their favorite MMORPG, designers often send out updates that buff or Nerf specific in-game character classes. If a character class is bettered and fresh skills are given to it that could give that class considerable advantages over others, it is said to have been buffed. If a character's skills have been nerved, though, you can expect unhappy players since some of the advantages they once had in the game have now been removed.

Most space MMO games use a leveling system to aid you in tracking your progress through the game and gauge your character's abilities against those of other players. Grinding, a term used frequently in online games, is a system of leveling up through which you simply hunt down one enemy after another until your experience grants you a new level. While it is not typically a favorite part of online gaming, grinding is considered to be one of the basic elements of all MMORPG's and is a very common term amongst gamers.

The basic feature of online games is their social features, such as in game chat systems that let players talk to one another as they play. Each game has its own chatting culture, including abbreviations that refer to locations, enemies, and items in the game those players are sure to learn as they play.

Space MMO games are so popular that they have actually developed their own culture. You are certain to understand the terminology of the gaming culture more as you become a part of that community.
